Offshoring, Nearshoring and local outsourcing: Definitions and benefits

29 January 2021

Outsourcing is a business strategy that many companies use, especially small and medium-sized entrepreneurs. It is a business process where companies hire external suppliers and transfer certain business tasks that they cannot handle internally but that are essential in their business. It has three types – offshoring, nearshoring and local outsourcing.

Offshoring

This type of outsourcing for e-commerce is a process where companies choose to move their business (either production or services) to the outsourcing companies in countries that are far from them. One example is US companies that outsource their customer service to the Philippines after discovering how cost-effective this strategy is in terms of work and resources.

The benefits of offshoring

As mentioned above, the main reason why companies choose to outsource for their e-commerce is to reduce labor, operations, and overhead costs. Other benefits of offshoring are:

  • Focusing on the core business – outsourcing customer service is not the focus of many companies, but they know that customer care is an important factor in their success. Therefore, they can not afford to have one. So they choose to outsource customer service to outsourcing companies from other countries.
  • To acquire skilled and expert talent for affordable wages – Western companies, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, discovered how much more advantageous it is to hire workers in the Philippines than to hire workers from their own countries. The understanding struck them that they pay cheaper salaries to the employees who have the same talents and education as their citizens.
  • Having 24/7 business operations – the company can continue 24/7 operations (for example outsourcing customer support 24/7) that they cannot possibly achieve in the domestic business unit.
  • To take advantage of tax incentives and other benefits – many developing countries offer different types of incentives to attract companies for foreign direct investment. A perfect example is outsourcing in the Philippines. The Philippine government has comprehensive support in outsourcing business processes.

Nearshoring

This type of outsourcing is called nearshoring, because it is obvious that companies choose to transfer business processes to outsourcing companies to neighboring countries. In this way, companies achieve cheaper operating costs and are geographically closer. Nearshoring enables companies to transfer their operations to a closer and more cost-effective location. An example of close outsourcing is that many companies in the United States choose to work near the coast in Canada, Mexico and other countries in Latin America.

The Benefits of Nearshoring

Nearshoring is becoming a popular choice for many companies. They benefit close to geographical proximity. This means that companies cannot be complicated by language barriers and reduce travel costs. Other benefits are:

  • To reduce costs and ensure close monitoring that leads to higher quality products.
  • För att göra det möjligt för virtuella team att göra beslut enklare och ta chansen att förbättra time-to-market schema på grund av de små tidszonsskillnaderna. Det leder till en arbetskraft som är mer stabil och produktiv.
  • To possibly eliminate night shifts, improve both quality and employee retention.
  • Having the opportunity for a face-to-face meeting due to the nearest locations for both the company and the outsourcing company.
  • To let companies stay close to their customer base.

Local outsourcing

This type of outsourcing is a process where companies transfer some of their business functions to companies in the country. A good example is a company in Florida that transfers business functions to a company in Georgia.

The benefits of local outsourcing

  • Local workers are easily accessible because they speak the same language and live in the same time zone.
  • They also have the same mentality as you.
  • As a business owner, control is in your hands of what they do and how they do it.
  • If a problem arises, they can solve it immediately. Everything is very promising and soothing.
